Program Information

Remedial

  1. Course Information - Classes are held daily: 8:00 am to 10:00 am and 10:15 am to 12:15 pm (unless otherwise specified). The objective of Registration of this program is to help those students who have completed but were not successful or received a low 'Pass' in this course during the regular school year to improve to a maximum of 63%. All assignments must be completed and attendance must be satisfactory.
  2. Fee Information - For Non-International students currently attending a BC school who can present a PEN, Home School report card and birthdate, a $100 book deposit is to be paid when registering. This book deposit will be refunded upon the return of all outstanding textbook(s) in good condition on the last day of class.
    Courses marked with an asterisk(*) are Provincially Examinable and students may return the textbooks on the date of the Provincial Examination. For books not returned at the end of the Provincial Examination, the deposit will be withheld.

  3. Permission/Pre-requisite - Students must have taken the course(s) previously. If a student’s Home School report card states “Remedial summer school denied” for a specific course, the student will not be permitted to take that course in the Remedial Program, but may take the Secondary Completion course. For Remedial courses, the home school reserves the right to determine if the Summer school mark will be accepted.
  4. Absences - Students who miss or late more than 3 days will NOT BE PERMITTED to continue taking the course AND will be withdrawn from the course.  For students who are late for 20 minutes or more for 3 times, this will count as 1 absence.
  5. Report Card/ID - ALL students enrolled in the Summer Program who attended a Secondary School in July 2016 MUST present their ORIGINAL Home School Final Report including their PEN to the Summer Program Teacher by the Report Card/ID - ALL students enrolled in the Summer Program who attended a Secondary School in July 2016 MUST present their ORIGINAL Home School Final Report including their PEN to the Summer Program Teacher by the first day of class in order to stay in class. Photocopies are not acceptable.
  6. Evaluation/Mark - Final exams will be written on the last day of class except for Provincial Examinable courses. See exam schedule listed in the main Summer Experience brochure. Final exams are weighted at 20% of the final mark. Students who do not write the exams will be given a mark of zero and this will be calculated into the final mark. Final Results for Remedial Courses will be as follows: The maximum achievable mark for these courses is 63%. For students whose results are 0% to 63%, the actual mark will be shown on the report card. Marks of 64% or above will be shown as 63%.
  7. Provincial Exam - Students who are registered in a provincial examinable course MUST present photo ID at the examination centre prior to write the exam.
  8. Workbooks - Some courses require students to purchase a workbook ranging from $20 to $50.
  9. Course Changes - The Vancouver School Board reserves the right to limit enrolment, change instructors and combine courses if enrolment minimums are not met. We also reserve the right to cancel a class due to low enrolment, or due to the unavailability of teachers or facilities. We cannot guarantee additional classes when enrolment surpasses expectations, so register early. Based on registrations some courses may be held at other locations and at different times.
  10. Registration Closing Date - Registration for Remedial Programs will close Thursday, July 7, 2016.

Completion

  1. Course Information - Classes are held daily: 8:00 am to 11:43 am and 12:17 pm to 4:00 pm (unless otherwise specified). Intended for students who have not yet graduated and who are 18 years or younger on July 1 of this year and:
    1. Wish to obtain a credit toward secondary completion
    2. Wish to improve their mark or who have never taken the subject and wish the opportunity to complete a course during the summer.
  2. Fee Information - For Non-International students currently attending a BC school who can present a PEN, Home School report card and birthdate, a $100 book deposit is to be paid when registering. This book deposit will be refunded upon the return of all outstanding textbook(s) in good condition on the last day of class.

Grade 12 students who do not meet graduation requirements must present at registration a Letter of Permission from their Home School Principal. Letter of Permission must be presented to the teacher by the seoncd day of class.

English Language Learning (ELL)

  1. Course Information - This program is designed to help ELL students who will be attending a secondary school in the upcoming school year in transition to main stream courses. The program will be content-based and relevant to the existing school curriculum. The objectives of the program includes:
    1. Developing the students’ English listening, speaking, reading and writing skills on both the academic and social levels.
    2. Maintaining and improving the language proficiency of students.
    3. The course content will change for each program.

  3. Permission/Pre-requisite - ASSESSMENT - At the beginning of the program, students will be assessed on their English language ability. The assessment will include a composition and standardized reading comprehension measures. PLACEMENT - After the initial assessment, students will be placed into the appropriate groupings. (eg. age appropriate, multi-level, ability levels). Some adjustments to placements may occur to meet students’ needs.
  4. Absences - Students who miss more than 3 days will NOT BE PERMITTED to continue taking the course, AND will be withdrawn from the course. For students who are late for 20 minutes or more for 3 times, this will count as 1 absence.
  5. Report Card/ID - ALL students enrolled in the Summer Program who attended a Secondary School in June 2016 MUST present their ORIGINAL Home School Final Report including their PEN to the Summer Program Teacher by the first day of class in order to stay in class. Photocopies are not acceptable.
  6. Evaluation/Mark - Evaluation is an on-going process which recognizes the individual learning of students. At Summer School, progress in language acquisition can be achieved through participation in all classroom activities. Teachers will keep a folder of each student’s work at Summer School. Summer School teachers or administrators will make NO placement recommendations to home schools.
  7. Provincial Exam - There are no provincial examinations for this program.

  1. Course Information - Classes held daily. These courses provide an opportunity for students to experience a course that may not be available in the regular school year and are open to students who are currently in Grades 7-9.
  2. Fee Information - Fees for fee-based courses is to paid when registering.

  2. Fee Information - For Non-International students currently attending a BC school who can present a PEN, Home School report card and birthdate, students may register for ONE Ministry Funded course without charge. The program will also provide courses that do not meet Prescribed Learning Outcomes and will be available at a fee. There is no restriction on the number of fee paying courses that a student can take.
